Legends of the Road
Yes, there really is such a thing as guilt-free eating! It’s not guilt free because you did 20 jumping jacks and fifty sit-ups first. One doesn’t need to earn the right to eat dessert without being overcome by remorse. There are still calories in these treats, but more goodness than you could possibly imagine given how comforting, satisfying, and sometimes decadent they are.
Desserts for the Body
These dishes (and I’ll supply a few recipes at the bottom, for more check out GuiltFreeDesserts review ) aren’t just free of guilt but also full of goodness for your body. They detox the body and kick-start the metabolic system. You really can’t fuel a body without food, not without losing muscle weight and that’s a sure way to also slow down your metabolism. Feed your body, feed your cravings, and don’t let them build up. Cravings you don’t satisfy only become more powerful.
Foods that Feed the Metabolism
Protein is perhaps the top-rated energy food, especially when you talk about laying down muscle. While the average person thinks of protein as “meat’ or “chicken,” don’t forget nuts, legumes, and dairy. While also laden with fat, these are healthy fats which feed the nervous system and muscles while protein supports every system in the body. Often, people err on the side of “less protein” and “more carbs” in the mistaken belief they are doing their bodies a favor. Actually, it’s better to feed your body with fewer refined carbs, more fruit and vegetables, and more protein. Don’t cut fat out completely by choosing only fat-free yogurt, for example, or fat-free snacks, that are usually missing fat but rich in sugar.
Ingredients that fit this profile and which are also useful when developing desserts are black beans, avocado (yes avocado, check this out), milk, soft cheese, coconut oil, nut butters, and peanut butter without added sugar, fat, or salt. Choose protein-rich flour if you are going to use flour at all. You don’t need it, really; in fact, guilt-free desserts are often gluten-free examples of metabolic cooking. (What is metabolic cooking you ask? I found out from the Metabolic cooking review , a very informative resource).
Detoxify with Dessert
You usually imagine dessert as a high-calorie splurge that’s not doing your body any good at all. Is it possible that dessert could cleanse your system? Detox smoothies don’t sound like a treat, but they can be wonderfully fulfilling as dessert and as a meal at the same time. How can that be? Smoothies which detoxify the body are full of fiber. This could be provided by psyllium or flax, for example; by high-fiber fruits and vegetables like pears, mangos, and broccoli; and by adding brown rice protein powder to a mixture. You could satisfy both the metabolic requirements and your cleansing schedule in one move with recipes that might not sound tasty but are, in fact, nourishing, detoxifying, and actually tasty.
How does a person accomplish the “tasty” part with so much health food in a smoothie like this one? Bananas, blueberries, and other fiber-rich fruits are naturally sweet; they hide a lot of the “healthy” qualities. Incorporate a natural sugar such as maple syrup or honey, each of which is also an anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant; excellent for the digestive system. Spoon in yogurt which replenishes good bacteria and also promotes healthy digestion of bad bacteria while encouraging the body to absorb nutrients. Add ice to promote the full breakdown of all ingredients, including flax or psyllium, and even consider dropping in a little bit of Stevia or Xylitol for more sweetness. Cocoa powder creates a rich flavor without the need to use real chocolate with its many calories. Since this is a drink as well as dessert, a smoothie promotes the elimination of toxins in your urine.
Desserts for Healthy Living
The following desserts will not help you lose weight in their own right. Incorporate them into a healthy lifestyle involving regular exercise; promote a healthy digestive system by drinking lots of water. As a metabolic diet goes, it isn’t useful unless you also place muscles under some stress by working out.
Sugar-free Power Brownies, Gluten and Dairy-free
This is not a lie: you really can enjoy brownies which are free of added sugar. They are still delicious because of the dates which are naturally sweet. Soak a cup of whole dates in water for at least an hour, preferably longer. Reserve the liquid for your smoothie or another recipe. Assemble your food processor (a blender won’t work). Blend dates first then start adding extra ingredients. These can include chopped nuts and/or nut butter plus dried fruit if you wish, but naturally dried, not sweetened or preserved with oil. Add two tablespoons of ground flax. Blend all of these ingredients, then add ¼ cup of cocoa. Blend some more until well mixed. If the mixture is still damp, increase the cocoa. You can also add quick oats to help absorb the dampness and add more fiber, but remember that not all oats are considered “gluten-free” because of growing conditions which are not easy to control.
Detox Smoothie for Dessert
Are you looking for a smoothie that sticks to the sides a little longer than most? Maybe you could do with a drink that you must eat with a spoon. Use a blender that crushes ice. Start with half a cup and crush ice finely. Add two tablespoons of plain, 2% to 4% yogurt. Blend. Pour honey, date water, or maple syrup over this and chop in half a large or one small banana with a handful of blueberries and a tablespoon of flax or psyllium, already ground. Blend fully, sweetening with a teaspoon of natural sugar replacement as needed. Two tablespoons of cocoa powder fully blended into the mixture will make it really rich, but you can also buy chocolate-flavored protein powder. Compote for Dessert
Compote is a comfort food that is spicy and warm. Spicy foods make you feel full and also activate the metabolism. Cinnamon is a natural blood sugar balancer too. Cook chopped fruit (peeled apple, nectarines, and pears; unpeeled plums, cherries, and berries) with a cinnamon stick and a peeled portion of ginger root over low heat. Slowly warm and cook, allowing the spice to diffuse its way through the blend. When ready, pour into bowls with a little bit of honey or pure maple syrup. Don’t cook these sugars; they lose their goodness.
